Palookaville

Palookaville
416 Brunswick St, Fitzroy
Phone: 9416 3942

Breaking our vegetarian streak on Brunswick Street, we tried some modern pub food in the dimly lit Palookaville. On arrival (at 7pm) the place was barely occupied but it obviously had regulars, with customers automatically knowing what to order.

The good bits:
  • Really fast service: it only took 10 minutes to get our meals
  • Food is extremely cheap, featuring mains for $14 and popular special steak nights
  • The decor was relaxing and spacious, with a variety of couches and chairs spread throughout the venue
The bad bits:
  • The serves were slightly small, but this could be a good thing if you are planning a big night out. We went to Bimbo's afterwards for some strawberry and cream pizza, which costs $4 every night (except Friday) from their pizza menu
  • The staff didn't have warm personalities. Although they were polite, their presence didn't add to the atmosphere
  • The meals were good but not memorable

Quirk of the place: Palookaville's kitchen is built to look like a separate house has been added to the back of the venue, adding a unique personality

Rating: Pretty Hot, but bordering on Can't Decide

Main- Crisp Masterstock Chicken. A tasty section of chicken,
although perhaps a little too crisp as it had burnt edges.

Main- Persian Lamb Shanks. A traditional meal, but with an added freshness. However,
we encountered a mysterious ingredient which appeared to be kidney?!?
